Accelerated Reader
(AR) is a self-motivated reading incentive program for students. Participation
in AR is voluntary, but encouraged to increase silent reading practice for our
students. Books in our library with AR quizzes will be marked with an
Accelerated Reader sticker on the spine. Books may also be found in personal
collections, classroom libraries, bookstores and the public library. The list
of quizzes owned by Vaughan Elementary will also be available at Chinn Park
Regional and Potomac Community libraries.
How does AR work? Your child will read an AR book on his/her reading level. The
book is read once or twice depending on your child’s ability. With
teacher permission the student may then take the reading practice quiz in the
library or classroom. Quizzes taken on the computer consist of reading
comprehension questions and immediately give the students results.
The program is designed to self-motivate students by offering immediate feedback
and tracking results by level. Research shows that those students reading on
their level and achieving 90% or above consistently on Accelerated Reader
quizzes can significantly improve their reading skills by moving up levels
systematically. AR is not reading instruction; it is reinforcement.
