Reading Program

The reading program at Vaughan serves in a supportive role to students, staff, and the community. All students are taught through research-based instructional strategies that focus on objectives from the SOLs. Our staff implements Vaughan’s Signature Programs such as Breakthrough to Literacy, Leap Frog, Compass Learning and Soar to Success. Additionally, instructional techniques such as Guided Reading, Literature Circles, Reading Workshops, and Writing Workshops are utilized to enhance students’ learning. The Reading Teacher provides both remediation and enrichment to students, ensuring that they are academically successful. The school and community work as partners to further benefit the children through programs such as Saturday Institute. By having the students, staff, and community working together all students can become life-long readers and leaders!

Library Program

Our students use the library for book check out, storytelling, and classroom instruction provided by the librarian and her assistant. Classroom instruction includes the Information Management Process (IMP), research skills and library usage skills. The library hosts two book fairs during the school year. We also sponsor reading incentive programs such as Accelerated Reader. We can always use your help in the library, so stop by to see what is happening. Our goal is to help your children grow to love reading and become life-long learners.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

ESOL classes are available to any student in grades 1-12. It is designed for students whom English is not the primary language and/or whose English is not adequate to function successfully in the regular subject areas.

All Limited English Proficient (LEP) students are identified by the Home Language Survey or the ESOL Program Referral Form. They are then screened to determine their English proficiency level and academic needs. Those students who are identified as eligible, and whose parents grant permission for the services, receive an average of one to four hours of English content-based instruction per day.

Special Education Program

The Vaughan special education team works collaboratively with the general education teachers, staff and community to support and remediate all special education children. Students are serviced in the least restrictive environment and may be seen in a variety of settings to best meet their needs. Each child has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) to facilitate academic success, meet specific needs and monitor growth. Parental support is a vital piece in developing a child’s specialized program. All students are encouraged to reach their fullest potential as life long learners.

Elementary Art Program

The elementary art curriculum provides a foundation for gaining knowledge and understanding of the visual arts. Emphasis is on cognitive, sensory, affective, and motor development through the production of art and exploration of ideas. Studies of art from many cultures, periods and other areas of learning provide students with opportunities to attain an appreciation of the role of art in contemporary society.

Students at Vaughan will be exposed to a wide variety of art materials and art experiences. The school has a kiln that is used to fire the students’ clay creations. Often, drawing activities are used which enhance each child’s learning style.

Music Program’s Mission Statement

Music is an integral part of humanity and is therefore an essential part of education. It serves as a vehicle for enjoyment and personal expression through which cultural heritage is passed on to each generation. Every student will have opportunities to perform, create, investigate, and connect music of many cultures, styles, and historical periods.

Through music education, our students will obtain skills necessary to develop and use their musical creativity and talent to the fullest of their capabilities. This will enrich their lives and the lives of others as they share their music. As they study music, students will learn to think, solve problems and communicate as they work toward a common goal. The knowledge of music empowers students to contribute to society and to respect and appreciate cultural similarities and differences.

Computer Program

Facilities

Vaughan has a computer lab that can provide services to 28 students. Students have access to the usual information provided to students in the county, including access Microsoft Office programs, a typing program, a graphical organizer, and the Internet. Additional services include access to a program called Compass Learning. This is an integrated learning system that can tailor a child’s instructional program to his or her individual level of learning. In other words, the system will pre-assess the students’ math and reading skills and automatically place them in an individualized program. Students who need remedial work will be placed in a lower level reading or math program. Students are able to work at a higher level than their assigned grade. Presently, we are the only school in the county with this unique program.

We will be offering additional time in the lab for selected students during the day. Some will receive enrichment while others will be slated for remediation. The Early Bird Catches the Learn project will start soon. This program will be provided for selected students whose parents can provide transportation to school at 8:00 a.m. in the morning. Students will receive additional support in reading and math

Current Work

Kindergarten and first grade are currently focusing on math in CompassLearning. Soon word processing will be introduced.

Second through fifth graders are currently focusing on three strands: learning touch typing through Type to Learn, working on math in CompassLearning, and creating, saving and opening simple slide shows in PowerPoint. Soon they will work on creating more more complex, subject-oriented slide shows, while continuing with typing and math.

Instructional Consultation Teams

The mission of Instructional Consultation as a model of team functioning is to link people and resources at all levels whereby general, special education, and pupil service personnel share the responsibility for the education of ALL students through the improved quality of service.

The goal of IC Teams is to Enhance/Improve/Increase student and staff performance

Objectives of IC Teams • Develop a systematic support network within each building, including a trained Instructional Consultation Team • Enhance teachers’ skills in and application of best practices of instructional assessment and delivery. • Develop school-wide norms of collaboration and problem-solving • Utilize data for classroom and school decisions

Description

The purpose of the team is to serve as a centralized problem-solving unit, to model interactive professionalism, and to operate as a consultant panel for each other and for teachers in the building (Rosenfield & Gravois, 1996). Within the team framework, each individual team member serves as a case manager to a classroom teacher and progresses through the problem-solving process.

Each team member is trained in Instructional Consultation and assumes a case management role when working with a classroom teacher who requests assistance of the team. Case managers and classroom teachers engage in a Collaborative Problem-Solving Process that is systematic and in which decisions are determined by the collection of specific student data. The case manager and teacher follow the problem-solving stages of: Problem Identification and Analysis, Intervention Design, Intervention Implementation, Intervention Evaluation, Follow-up and Closure.
