Overview
The Federal School Medicaid Program originally started in 1988. The Commonwealth of Virginia authorized school districts to participate in the Federal Medicaid Program in 1991. The program is jointly administered by the Virginia Department of Education and the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS).
Prince William County is licensed by DMAS to receive federal funds from two sources. We participate in the School Medicaid Program which allows PWC to receive reimbursement for medical services that we provide, such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. Additionally, PWC participates in an Administrative Time Study three times a year. This program provides federal reimbursement for administrative activities associated with health-related activities such as conferences, meetings, and planning.
- Appropriate health care will benefit children's readiness and ability to learn.
- Numerous health-related services are provided in the schools.
- The Federal Medicaid program will reimburse schools for many health services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, skilled nursing services, psychological services, and others.
- Participation in the school Medicaid program requires parental permission.
- Participation in the school program will in no way impede a family's lifetime Medicaid benefits.
- Parents of uninsured students should see the school guidance counselor to receive assistance and complete the paperwork necessary to receive Medicaid services.
Applications for Medicaid are available through the Department of Social Services by calling 703-792-7500.
The Prince William County Public Schools Medicaid Program is committed to participating in the program in a manner that complies with policies and regulations of the school division, the Virginia Department of Education, and the Department of Medical Assistance Services.
