Every Student Succeeds Act  (ESSA)

On December 10, 2015, President Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act into law. States will work on developing new accountability standards as we transition to ESSA. States will not report school performance based on the former established ESEA Flexibility Annual Measureable Objectives (AMO) targets for school year 2016-17. Still, many portions of the new law will look familiar.  Students will still be tested in grades 3-8 and once in high school. School Divisions and States will still have to report student achievement data disaggregated by student subgroup in order to ensure transparency and accountability, as well as teacher qualifications. New state and local accountability systems should be implanted by 2017-18 school year.
