Welcome to the Elementary Summer Thrive!

For the elementary school level, every Title I teacher specialist distributes pre-created Reading or Math packets to 30 students. Each teacher connects with the 30 families at a Summer Thrive Event. The teachers discuss and explain the importance of summer learning, review materials, and provide ideas and suggestions of what to do with the materials given.

Are you ready to have some math fun?

Each of the 30 students selected by the Title I Math Specialist received a manipulative bag and a math notebook filled with fun daily activities and games for a family to engage together while reviewing mathematical concepts from the year!

Remember to let us know what you are doing over the summer! Log all of the fun math activities you are doing on the Elementary Summer Math Log form.

Summer Thrive Reading

Fill your summer with reading!

Each of the 30 students selected by the Title I Reading Specialist received a set of books to start an at-home summer reading library!

Enjoy reading as a family! Enjoy reading independently!

Summer Writing is just as important as Summer Reading!

Don't forget to take some time and write! Each student was provided a Summer writing journal that has different prompts on each page.   Find a prompt you like!  Think about what it is asking you to write about and… write, write, write!  Show us all that you wrote! Bring the journal back to school in the fall so we can read it!

Welcome to the Middle School Summer Thrive!

For the middle school level, Title I wants to "jump start" summer by providing students and families with materials to work with over the summer. 

Each Title I middle school team connected with 30 families and invited them to a Summer Thrive Event. The Title I teachers discussed and explained the importance of summer learning and connecting as a family. Each family received math activities and the students had a chance to make a book collection to help jump start their love of reading and math over the Summer.

Summer Thrive Reading

Students were able to "jump start" their reading this summer by selecting books from our Summer Thrive Bookfair Collections. Families were encouraged to pick the books together.

Tips for choosing a book:

• Browse the front and back covers or the book flap.
• Read the summary that is given about the story.
• Explore the inside of the book.
  • Do you know the genre (kind of) book it is?
  • Does it have pictures to help understand the story?
  • Skim the story. Do you like how the author writes?

Families are encouraged to start a Family Book Club!

Read, discuss, and write about the stories.

Tips for writing:

• Write in a journal.
• Write post-it notes to each other about the book.
• Write a letter, postcard, or email to family members telling them about the story or characters in the story.

Summer Thrive Math

Host a Family Game Night!

Each family received engaging games to play together and build math skills!

Examples of games that might have been given are:

• Absolute Zero game to build positive and negative number strength.
• Blobby's Pizza game to build number operation and strength with fractions and decimals.
• SET game to build translation and rotation strength.
• Mancala game to build strategy strength.

This game helps to build math skills by using negative and positive numbers. Great skills to have when paying for items and balancing a banking account.

This game is a fast pace card game!

This game helps to build math skills by using all mathematical translations and rotations while building visual perception and applying rules of same and different.

Welcome to High School Summer Thrive!

This year for High School Summer Thrive each school held a focus event on “jump starting” the school year for rising 9th graders, or current 9th graders, or a combination of both. This event gave an opportunity for families to learn about what is needed to have a successful summer and start of the upcoming school year. Community and school groups were at the event to share information and many resources were given out.

Another great resource for the high school level is the Prince William Public Libraries. The Prince William Public Libraries can help students and families with several topics such as dealing with career track, college prep, reading during the summer, language learning and more!

We encourage you to visit your local public library branch or public library online access over the summer.

The Prince William County Public Library has so many resources to offer you from training programs, to challenges, to research, to learning about careers, to just building the love of reading.
