The Italian Cultural Society (ICS) sponsors a variety of awards to honor Washington, D.C. area elementary, high school, and university students who excel in the study of the Italian language. This year the Italian Cultural Society of Washington, D.C. was honored to present Maria Wilmeth Scholar awards to ambitious students in the DMV.
One of the winners was Katherine Deforest, Italian III student at Woodbridge High School and student of Ms. Ileana Ippolito. To earn the award, she wrote a biographical letter in Italian explaining why she chose to study Italian, and she created a three-minute video speaking in Italian. She and her parents were invited to attend a gala on October 14. At the gala, there was a theater performance by Laura Caparrotti and actor Rocco Sisto, dinner, and scholarship awards presentations. During the summer, Katherine enjoys visiting Rome and exploring the ancient monuments.
