National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist Alan Menchaca

Mixing academic achievement with a sense of humor and strong desire to balance school and fun, Alan Menchaca is a shining example of a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist. A National Merit Scholarship semifinalist is recognized based on a high score on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Menchaca has an opportunity to become one of 15,000 finalists, qualifying him for college scholarships.

Menchaca, a reserved and exceptionally bright student, credits his academic success to several factors, but mostly to his mom who took him to the library once a week, encouraging his love of reading and learning by letting him choose the stories he brought home.

As a senior at Gar-Field High School and also enrolled at The Governor’s School @ Innovation Park (GS@IP), Menchaca says that he enjoys attending both. At Gar-Field, he likes that he is with friends that he’s known since middle school; at GS@IP, he finds the classes are less restrictive and says he enjoys an environment where students arrive at the answers together. Menchaca says that GS@IP is the perfect place to express himself academically.

Menchaca is considering academics and classroom culture as he prepares to apply to colleges and universities to attend next fall. He does not want to be the kind of person whose life is only school, but one who creatively thinks, learns and enjoys life.

His favorite teachers—too many to name—have always made class subjects come to life for him. “I love a good story, and any teacher that can bring a subject to life with a good story – making the subject more than just a list of facts or dates, is my favorite kind of teacher,” shared Menchaca.
