Staff dances the disco at 50th Anniversary celebrationTyler Elementary was buzzing with excitement earlier this month when the community came together to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary.

Students and a host of special guests packed the building for the birthday bash. The guest list included former students, former staff, school board members, and more.

Tyler principal Jennifer Perilla credits her anniversary committee with planning the event that included a trip down memory lane with “Tyler Through the Decades.” Special guests described changes to Tyler over its 50 years, and the Tomcat chorus sang songs that topped the charts in the 60s,70s, 80s and 90s.

An ice cream social followed the presentation, and guests were invited to tour the building and view student-created work celebrating Tyler’s history.

“We take great pride in our kiddos not only getting a world-class education, but also ensuring that they spend their days in an environment that focuses on their entire well-being,” said Perilla.

Tyler Elementary was named for George Grayson Tyler, who lived in the Haymarket area where the school sits. It opened its doors in September 1968. George Tyler served as a teacher and Superintendent of Schools.
