Springwoods Elementary designated Virginia’s first World Kindness School banner

Springwoods Elementary School became Virginia’s first World Kindness School when they signed their declaration with the World Kindness Organization in October of 2018. The declaration, signed during an assembly for students with local dignitaries as guests, states that kindness will always be at the forefront of the school’s decisions.

This designation comes from the World Kindness Organization, whose mission is to inspire individuals and communities to see kindness as a new form of corporate social responsibility.

The school began its journey toward designation by speaking with Springwoods parent and World Kindness Organization ambassador Jennifer Smith, who referred them to Michael Lloyd-Wright, the secretary general of the World Kindness Movement, who worked with the school to gain their designation.

When asked why the school sought such a designation, Sue Cerrone, school counselor at Springwoods, asked, “Why shouldn't a school promote kindness in a big way?"

“When else in our lives, other than our school years, are we so fortunate as to be in close community with people who may be vastly different from us? We want our students to recognize the value of our diversity, and it begins with the acceptance and treatment of others,” continued Cerrone.

Students at Springwoods have taken part in multiple kindness-themed events this school year. In September, students concentrated on doing random acts of kindness and documented their acts on paper chains they hung throughout the school. In October, Juliana Corsi, Ms. National Teen, visited Springwoods and spoke with all fourth- and fifth-graders about kindness, which is her platform. In November, the students took place in a school-wide hands and hearts picture.

Looking toward spring, Cerrone described the school’s other upcoming kindness events, “The SOL Pep rally with a kindness theme will highlight our April. Principal Mainor will be doing a school-wide Kindness Read Aloud on the morning announcements in May, and June will be spent preparing to welcome our many new students to Springwoods.”

Promoting kindness as a culture is Positively PWCS!
