US News and World Report High School Rankings

U.S. News & World Report has recognized six high schools in Prince William County among the best in the nation. The 2019 rankings are based on data from the 2016-17 school year.

High Schools in PWCS earning the 2019 Best High Schools distinction include:

  • Osbourn Park (ranked #25 in VA, #957 in Nation)
  • Battlefield (ranked #26 in VA, #966 in Nation)
  • Patriot (ranked #34 in VA, #1259 in Nation)
  • Hylton (ranked #66 in VA, #2450 in Nation)
  • Forest Park (ranked #82 in VA, #3101 in Nation)
  • Woodbridge (ranked #90 in VA, #3612 in Nation)

Colgan, the Division’s newest high school, remained unranked because there was no graduating class in 2016-17. Graduation data for Colgan is available for the 2017-18 school year, making them eligible for the 2020 rankings.

U.S. News & World Report has been generating rankings of the “best” high schools for years. This year, they made changes to their methodology so that more schools would be included in the rankings. They no longer have gold, silver, or bronze medals. Schools are now ranked based on a weighted index that includes the following six factors; college readiness, math and reading proficiency, math and reading performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth, and graduation rate. Schools in the top 40% in their rankings can claim the distinction and are allowed to post “badges” on their website indicating they are among the “best high schools.”
