Melvin visited the Chinn Park Regional Library as part of the Greater Prince William Reads: Chasing Space event. Melvin grew up in Lynchburg, VA.

Greater Prince William Reads, or GPW Reads, partnered with Manassas City Public Schools, Manassas Park City Schools and the Prince William County Public Schools to coordinate the community read. According to GPW Reads, “Amazing Space” was chosen as this year’s theme based on the book “Chasing Space” by Melvin. An alternate book, “Mae Among the Stars” by Roda Ahmed, was chosen as the community read for the younger students.

According to the GPW Reads website, “Amazing Space was chosen for its themes of STEAM, diversity, and perseverance, all of which are relevant and appealing to a wide audience.”

GPW Reads facilitated a book discussion, and Melvin gave a presentation about his background and autographed copies of his book during the event. Melvin’s book was also discussed in classrooms across the Division.
