The cast of "Seussical: the Musical" at Woodbridge High School

The fantastical world of Dr. Seuss is the setting of the musical “Seussical,” filled with beloved characters such as The Cat in the Hat, The Grinch, and Horton. This spring, Woodbridge High School (WHS) theatre presented, “Seussical: the Musical,” providing audiences with a fun-filled evening of song and dance.

Synopsis:
“Seussical” follows The Cat in the Hat (Keiran Weldon) as he tells the story of Horton (Michael Plaugher), an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that is home to the Whos, including Jojo (Madeleine Doyle), a Who-child sent off to military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton finds himself in a pickle when he must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, while also guarding an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird (Candace Todd). Through ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, courageous Gertrude McFuzz (Jessica Prymak) stands by Horton. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, family, and community emerge triumphant, with the former naysayers vowing to protect the Whos, and Jojo’s family accepting him for who he is.

Other featured characters include naysayer Sour Kangaroo (Lillie Cooper), head of the military school, General Gengus Kahn Schmitz (Donovyn James), Jojo’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mayor (Harrison Kelly and Ella Baumann), the girl group of the jungle, The Bird Girls (Cenaya Reed, Miriam Elhadidi, and Denait Ghirmay), the Sour Kangaroo’s monkey cohorts, The Wickersham Brothers (Seth Anders, Caleb Blair, and Antonio Godinez), the Grinch (Nicholas Perkins), Vlad Vladikoff and Yertle the Turtle (CJ Johnson), and the Cat in the Hat’s helpers Thing 1 (Kaylie Farfan) and Thing 2 (Ashlyn Hernandez).

“Seussical” is a production that provides young performers a chance to showcase their many talents. The colorful and fun characters shine throughout the production, most especially in the Jungle of Nool and Circus McGurkus.

Seussical’s Standout:
The use of the many individual and group talents of the cast that enhanced the overall spectacle of the production stood out as a highlight. From the breathtaking precision of the soldiers dancing, to the Circus McGurkus performers who included tumblers, clowns, an acrobat, and unicycle rider, to the Whoville ensemble moving in perfect synchronization as the wind blew their speck of dust around, to the antics of the Cat in the Hat and Things 1 and 2, the entire cast was a strong ensemble that worked together seamlessly to highlight those talents.
