More than 150 students graduated during the Independence Nontraditional School Commencement and Awards Ceremony at the Hylton Performing Arts Center on June 6. The class of 2019 is the school’s first graduating class.

Graduates and their families and friends were welcomed by Principal Robert Eichorn, and remarks were made by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steve Walts. Valedictorian Victor D. Navarrete led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Student speakers, including Nas G. Williams, Teresa D. Hernandez, Donovan N. Jones, Sarah E. Jagels, Makenzie R. Steele, and Giovanni-Manuel Medina, shared stories of challenges and perseverance, focusing on the devoted support they receive from school staff, and their friends and families.

A presentation of five categories of awards, the Personal Achievement awards, Citizenship awards, Faculty awards, Principal’s awards, and Student Leader awards, preceded the commencement address and presentation of certificates.

Students and staff of Independence Nontraditional School, as well as School Board Members and PWCS staff, shared in the excitement of this school’s first commencement. Dr. Walts tweeted at the start of the graduation, “So proud to be attending the first graduation ceremony of [Independence]. We have waited and worked a long time to build and open Independence Nontraditional School!”

Congratulations to the Independence Nontraditional School Class of 2019!
