West Gate Elementary School Parent Liaison Adriana HillAdriana Hill, school parent liaison at West Gate Elementary School, is the Greater Prince William recipient of the 2019 Allies in Prevention Award from SCAN of Northern Virginia. The award recognizes her “exceptional work supporting parents by leading parenting classes, encouraging families and children at West Gate Elementary School.”

Hill was nominated for this award by Rozlyn Giddens, Allies in Prevention Coalition member and the parent education volunteer coordinator for Prince William County’s Virginia Cooperative Extension Parenting Program. Selected by SCAN’s executive board committee, Hill received her award at the SCAN of Northern Virginia’s 17th Annual Allies in Prevention Awards ceremony in April. Emcee Leon Harris of NBC4 honored Hill as a remarkable hero working to prevent child abuse and neglect in Northern Virginia.

According to her nominator, who describes her as “a feisty, determined trailblazer,” Hill goes above and beyond the functions of her job. West Gate is 80 percent Spanish-speaking, and all of the students walk to school. Many students are dealing with multiple challenges to success at school.

“Adriana works tirelessly to address the needs of the whole child,” noted Giddens. Giddens states that Hill established a school food bank as well as a holiday gift drive for students in need. “She is a trained Systematic Training for Effective Parenting class facilitator and spent free time in her summers at Parent Facilitator training with Virginia Cooperative Extension.”

“Adriana understands that meeting the physical, emotional, and educational needs of a family helps reduce and eliminate child abuse and neglect,” added Giddens. “She does this work without fanfare. She humbly and happily relishes the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students.”
