Firefighters with young students dressed in firefighter gear

Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue visit Dale City Elementary kindergarten students each year during Fire Safety Week. The firefighters talk with these young students about the importance of knowing what to do in the event of a fire and who to call. They also shared with the kindergartners what firefighters wear and sound like when responding to an emergency so they would not be scared of the gear.

“As a team, we feel this information is so valuable because in an emergency, we want our students to run toward a firefighter, not away,” shared Mary Loudy, kindergarten teacher at Dale City.

As a culminating activity this year, all kindergarten students, teachers and visiting firefighters participate in a fire safety parade.  A fire truck led the way on the parade route around the school and neighborhood, and a rescue vehicle brought up the rear. Having the firefighters walk with the students during the parade made it extra special.

Many of the Dale City Elementary students claimed this to be “the best day ever!"

Thank you to Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue for teaching students about fire safety in an engaging way.
