Assessments for Virginia Licensure

Virginia requires specific assessments for associated endorsement areas. If required assessments have not been met upon initial licensure, a three year non-renewable license will be issued by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). PWCS allows new teachers one year to complete assessment requirements while holding a valid non-renewable license. Upon completion of the required assessments have your scores sent to you and then forward a copy of your passing scores (front sheet with name, Social Security number) to the Certification Office or fax to 703-791-8848. Virginia does not require assessments for the Technical Professional License (auto mechanics, cosmetology, ROTC, etc.) or the Pupil Personnel Services License (School Counselor, Psychologist, Social Worker, and Visiting Teacher)

Assessment Requirements for Virginia Licensure (Word)

*Assessment score sheets should not be sent directly to VDOE.

Effective July 1, 2024, individuals will no longer be required to take or pass the VCLA as a requirement for initial licensure. After June 30, 2024, individuals who have been cited for the VCLA, and who have completed all other initial licensure requirements, may submit a request to update their evaluation and be issued a full, renewable license. Individuals who are employed in a Virginia educational agency should work directly with their employing agency’s human resources or licensure representative in submitting this request.
