Virginia State and Local Civic Education Requirement

Any individual licensed and endorsed to teach (i) middle school civics or economics or (ii) high school government or history who is seeking renewal of such license is required to demonstrate knowledge of Virginia history or state and local government by completing a module or professional development course specifically related to Virginia history or state and local government that has a value of five professional development points.

You are required to complete the civics module if you currently hold any one of the following specific endorsements on your Virginia teaching license. (NOTE: If you are only endorsed in Pre-K-3 or Elementary Grades Pre-K-6, this training does not apply to you. However if you hold any of the specific endorsements listed below that allows you to teach history, social studies, economics or government in grade 7 or higher you are required to complete the training module at the time of your initial or next license renewal. The module takes less than one hour to complete. The requirement is not based on what you are currently teaching but rather if any of the endorsements reflected on your license allow you to teach history, social studies, government or economics. Please do not request to drop an endorsement from a license for this reason.

If taking the module for the second time, upon entry of your email address, the original certificate you received may generate, and you will need to select the "Reset Progress and Start Over" option presented as a link.

This requirement applies for purposes of the individual's next or initial renewal occurring after July 1, 2014.

Successful completion of the Virginia State and Local Civic Education Module will satisfy this renewal requirement.

Please print and retain the module certificate of completion. Include a copy of the Certificate of Completion with your license renewal packet sent to the PWCS Office of Certification. Completion of the Virginia State and Local Civic Education Module earns five license renewal points for Option 8, Professional Development.

All license holders meeting the above criteria will be required to complete the Virginia State and Local Civic Education Module however any license holder may choose to complete the Virginia State and Local Civic Education Module to earn five license renewal points for Option 8, Professional Development.
