Critical Areas of Need in Prince William County Public Schools

For the 2022-23 school year, the Virginia Department of Education has identified the following 10 critical shortage teaching areas:
- Elementary Education PreK-6
- Special Education
- Middle Education Grades 6-8
- Career and Technical Education
- Mathematics Grades 6-12 (including Algebra 1)
- Science (Secondary)
- Foreign Language PreK-12
- English (Secondary)
- History and Social Science (Secondary)
- Health and Physical Education
Provisional Licensure
Did you know that a bachelor's degree in the following specific areas is accepted for provisional licensure?
- Agricultural Education
- American Sign Language
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Dance Arts
- English
- Environmental Science
- Geology
- Marketing
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Technology Education
- Theatre
- Visual Arts
If you do not have at least a bachelor's degree in one of these areas or a degree in education, but believe you may be eligible for licensure based upon coursework completed in college, please visit our Become a Teacher page and review the Endorsement Worksheets.
Experiential Learning Credits
In unique cases of well-qualified candidates, experiential learning credits may be granted in lieu of the coursework for the endorsement (teaching) content area:
- Hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university;
- Have at least five years of documented full-time work experience that may include specialized training related to the endorsement sought; and
- Have met the qualifying score on the content knowledge assessment prescribed by the Board of Education.
The criteria do not apply to teachers of special education and elementary education (prek-3 and prek-6).
