Resources and Instructional Materials

Libraries provide students with access to materials to support academic needs, student growth, literacy development, and personal interests. Certified school librarians co-teach lessons that focus on multiple literacies. Literacies are immersed in the National School Library Standards defined by the American Association of School Librarians, which empower students to think, create, share, and grow their learning through the PWCS curriculum and the Virginia Standards of Learning (VAASL 2018).

The library’s function is based on student voice and choice. Students may select any materials in a school library collection they want to read and borrow. (See Parent Library Controls for information on designating what student-selected library materials you may wish to restrict access to for your student(s).)

Resources are included in the school library based on the following:

  • Support for the PWCS Strategic Plan and the Profile of a Graduate.
  • Provide informational and recreational resources in audio, video, and print format to inspire every student to be a lifelong learner and participate in civic society.
  • Provide students and staff with a curated collection of current, diverse, and easily accessible resources to support inquiry, engagement, exploration, collaboration, and inclusiveness.
