Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
Prince William County Public Schools recognizes September as Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children in the U.S. During the month of September, Prince William County Public Schools promotes awareness and supports our students, families, and loved ones who are suffering from this disease.
Cancer Awareness
- In 2024, approximately 9,620 children aged 0 to 14 in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with cancer.
- Approximately 1,040 children are expected to lose their lives to the disease this year.
- The most frequently diagnosed cancers in children aged 0 to 14 years are leukemias, brain and other central nervous system (CNS) tumors, and lymphomas.
- While cancer in children and adolescents is uncommon, it remains the leading cause of disease-related death among children in the United States after infancy.
- 8 to 10 percent of childhood cancers are due to inherited genetic mutations passed from parents to their children.
