National SEL Week

Social emotional learning (SEL) changes lives. Studies show that SEL improves well-being and academic outcomes, builds a positive school climate, and provides children with the necessary skills to excel in today's workforce. Prince William County Public Schools recognizes National SEL Week, March 4–8, 2024, and this year's focus is Today's Students, Tomorrow's Leaders.

At home and in the community, we can reflect on the following SEL skills:
  • Self-Awareness—My recognition of who I am, what I need and how I feel relative to the world around me.
  • Self-Management—My ability to manage my emotions and behaviors, to complete a task or succeed in a challenging situation.
  • Social Awareness—My demonstration of consideration for others and a desire to positively contribute to my community.
  • Relationship Skills—My ability to use positive communication and social skills to interact effectively with others.
  • Decision Making—My approach to problem solving involves learning from others, from past experiences and using my values to guide my action and accepting responsibility for my decisions.
Schools are encouraged to express the importance and impact of social-emotional learning. Together, we can raise awareness for SEL, bring on new SEL stakeholders, create artifacts that demonstrate SEL in action, and share SEL best practices. Join us on Friday, March 8, to celebrate international #SELday with these toolkits and resources.
