The School Board Approved:

• The Contract awarded to Royalle Dining Services for use by the Office of School Food and Nutrition Services for student meals;
• Authorization for the School Division to send revised rezoning comments to Prince William County about Pioneer Assemblage development and a proposed school site;
• The School Board minutes of December 2; and
• The recommended 2016‒17 annual school calendar that incorporated the pre-labor day opening option.

• Two students from Woodbridge High School spoke about their team being a winner in the Governor's Challenge of Personal Finance competition;
• Prince William Federation of Teachers' survey, addition of 10 minutes to the school day, and child care;
• Prince William Education Association's survey, school calendar, and class size reduction;
• "Growing Our Own" program in Prince William County Public Schools;
• School Board salaries; and
• Many citizens thanked the outgoing School Board members Mr. Milton C. Johns, Mrs. Lisa E. Bell, Mrs. Betty Covington, and Dr. Michael I. Otaigbe, for their years of service to the Prince William School Board and the School Division.

• There will be a public meeting on the "Chinn Park" elementary school site on Thursday, January 7 from 7‒9 p.m. at Gar-Field High School.
• Governor Terry McAuliffe recently recognized five Potomac High School students and their teacher, Ms. Latizzia Bullock, for their participation in the school's Information Technology Cyber Security program. The students are Ivelin Western, Reymart Taba, Jaida Jenkins-Curtis, Victor Western, and Humza Subzwari.
  • Governor McAuliffe called the students "cyber warriors" representing the future of data protection.
  • The four-year Cyber Security program opened this year at Potomac High School and is open to all students across the county.

• The 2nd annual Parent Summit on Saturday, January 10 at Hylton High School, from 8‒11 a.m. This is a free event for parents and guardians of 8th-graders and high school students, but you need to register on the high school webpages in advance so we can be sure we have space.
• Tomorrow night, Forest Park High School students will be at Bel Air Elementary School to donate computers to about 30 families through our Virginia STAR computer refurbishment program. They also provide training to the families who pick up the computers. This event will begin at 5:30 p.m. Since 2010, the VA STAR program has refurbished and donated over 4,700 computers and the students who work on the computers gain valuable technology skills that can lead to industry certification.
• Tonight we say farewell to our Chairman At-Large Milt Johns, and members Lisa Bell, Betty Covington, and Michael Otaigbe.
  • Mr. Johns has been a strong leader on the board, representing the county in a just and impartial manner. He has been a voice of unity when difficult decisions and compromises have had to be made. He leaves with a legacy of achievements that have brought Prince William County Public Schools national recognition for excellence.
  • Mrs. Bell has served throughout her tenure with dedication to the cause of the most vulnerable of our children while holding true to the best interest of all children.
  • Mrs. Covington has served her constituents in the Potomac District with passion. Her experience as an educator for more than 50 years has driven her vision and directed her energy toward the future. She brought to the board an organizational memory that was highly valued. We are happy to know that she intends to continue to be an involved education advocate as she steps down from the board.
  • Dr. Otaigbe brought to his Coles District seat a true American success story-his personal journey toward the American dream, as told through his engaging storytelling. Dr. Otaigbe is known for his advocacy of virtual instruction, which offers alternative learning opportunities. Dr. Otaigbe has championed that cause, among many others.
  • I thank Mr. Johns, Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Covington, and Dr. Otaigbe for their exceptional leadership and service on behalf of the children and staff of Prince William County Public Schools. I have enjoyed working with you and will miss you. I wish you only the best in the years ahead.
