The School Board approved:

• The amendment to the Fifth Affiliation Agreement with George Mason University and the Governor's School @ Innovation Park;
• The utility easements for portable classroom relocations for the 2016‒17 school year;
• The contract award for Group Health Insurance Program to Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield;
• The liability/property insurance renewal contract and rates;
• The resolution requesting that the Prince William Board of County Supervisors transfer $6,000,000 in proffer funds for construction of Kyle R. Wilson Elementary School;
• Payrolls for the month of April;
• The list of proposed Legislative Positions for inclusion in the 2017 Virginia School Boards Association Legislative Positions;
• School Board meeting minutes for May 18 and 25;
• The recommended revisions to the 2016‒17 "Code of Behavior"; and
• The proposed FY 2017 budget.

  Citizens' Comment Time:

  Citizens addressed the School Board on the following topics:

• Project Learning Tree's Green Schools Grants;
• Head Start Programs and survey;
• Solar energy at Battlefield High School;
• School nurses and school health services program;
• Teacher transfers;
• Site-base management; and
• Employee workload.

  Presentations on the Following Topics:

• Special Education Advisory Committee annual report;
• Energy Conservation Program 2016 progress report;
• Proposed Charter - Infrastructure Task Force information. Presentation to the School Board;
• Revisions of Regulation 511.03-1, "Certificated Employees - Assignments, Transfers, Promotions and Reassignments." (No action is required on first reading);
• Head Start annual report; and
• Facility design selection for the 13^th high school.

  Superintendents' Time:

  Dr. Steven L. Walts, Superintendent of Schools, made the following comments:

• Four high schools are ranked among the top in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in its annual Best High Schools list. Osbourn Park, Battlefield, Patriot, and Hylton High Schools are ranked among the top 10 percent out of more than 21,000 high schools in the country.
• Ms. Susan McNamara, a business education teacher at Woodbridge High School and her students, Cameron Tefft, Jazmin Reyes, Jessica Smith, and Marlon Walker, were recognized in the 2016 Governor's Challenge in Economics and Personal Finance competition, as the team earning second in the state.
• Several students received Cappie nominations for their performances in high school theatre productions. Three students from Woodbridge High School - Celeste Taica, Fatima Dyfan, Danny Waldman, and from Potomac High School, Emmanuel Kikoni.
• Ms. Robin Weisman, administrative coordinator for the Office of Special Education, was recently appointed to the Board of Directors for the Autism Society of Northern Virginia.
• Supervisor of Instructional Technology Ms. Diane Harazin was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Virginia Society for Technology in Education for a three-year term.
• In a recent report from the Governor's Office, a total of 12 schools were recognized as high-achieving schools in the Virginia Index of Performance Awards. This is an incentive program from the state Board of Education.
• The Battlefield High School Choir, under the direction of Mr. Doug Burney, has been selected as an Honors Choir by the Virginia Music Educators Association. In addition, the Forest Park High School Concert Choir under the direction of Ms. Lara Brittain, was also selected as an Honors Choir.
• Gravely Elementary School's Odyssey of the Mind students recently placed third at the state level.
• Three School Division programs featured in the annual Virginia School Boards Association "Showcases for Success" Directory, which highlights successful programs in Virginia's public schools are:
  • The Project Lead the Way Biomedical Sciences program at Osbourn Park High School.
  • The Career & Technical Education Cyber Security Program at Potomac High School.
  • The Virginia Student Training & Refurbishment Program, otherwise known as Virginia STAR computer refurbishment program.

School Board meetings are held in the School Board Meeting Room at 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas. Citizens who wish to address the School Board under Citizens' Comment Time may notify the Board Clerk in writing, by phone, or by email prior to noon on the day of the meeting.

Citizens may also sign up to speak prior to 6:55 p.m. on the day of the meeting. Closed Sessions start at 6 p.m. and are followed by public sessions, which start at 7 p.m.
