    Superintendent's Time:
Dr. Steven L. Walts, Superintendent of Schools, made the following announcements:
    • October is Bullying Prevention Month, which reminds us that bullying has no place in our schools or anywhere else. PWCS works together with students, employees, and parents to prevent it.
    • The School Board approved a resolution for the upcoming observance of National Red Ribbon Week, and you heard some of our students speak. We ask everyone to work with your school to help share information on drug abuse prevention and join us and wear red on Red Ribbon Day. (A brief video public service announcement was presented on Red Ribbon Week.)
    • Now is the time of year to learn about the many middle school specialty programs our School Division offers. There will be two Middle school information sessions held on October 9th and 10th at the Kelly Leadership Center, and will cover math and science, world languages, and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme.
    • PWCS will participate in the annual Great Southeast ShakeOut earthquake drill across many states on Thursday, October 19, at 10:19 a.m. Just six years ago, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Virginia. All families are urge to review their safety plans for all natural disasters.
    • We have met one of the School Board's 2017-18 goals for the Superintendent and the School Division. 91.8 percent of our students in the Class of 2017 graduated on time, which continues to outpace the statewide and national results. In fact, our on-time graduation rate has risen every year for the past 10 years. This kind of success can only be achieved because of the important work that begins in our elementary schools, continues through our middle schools, and culminates in our high schools. On behalf of the administrative leadership team and the School Board, I thank and congratulate our more than 11,000 employees for their outstanding work, as we all strive together to provide a World-Class Education.
    • On behalf of the Superintendent's Staff, all our employees, and our students and their families, I offer sincere appreciation to Acting Brentsville School Board member Shawn Brann for his service while Gil Trenum was on deployment. We wish you continued success and thank you for your support of Prince William County Public Schools.
