    Presentation:

    Prior to the beginning of the meeting, Business Partnership Awards were presented to business and school partnerships that have significantly improved academic achievement and/or work readiness skills in our students. Partnership of the Year awards were received by CroppMetcalfe, nominated by the Office of Career and Technical Education; Crossroads-Connection, nominated by Tyler Elementary School; and The Links, Inc., Old Dominion Chapter, nominated by Minnieville Elementary School. The Sharon Henry Partner in Education Award was presented to Bubbles Salon, nominated by Ashland Elementary School.

    Positively PWCS:

    Each School Board meeting begins with presentations about the good things that our schools are accomplishing. These presentations are intended to focus on how we are preparing our students academically and socially for success in college and careers.

    • Principal Heather Abney and Director of Activities George Washington discussed some of the state championship awards won by Woodbridge High School students, including the girls varsity basketball team, a wrestler, a runner, creative writing, and the crew team.

    Citizens addressed the School Board on the following topics:

    • Elementary School 3D design challenge;
    • and IEP meetings and decision making.

    • It is a very busy time, and I have had the pleasure of attending more than 35 events, in addition to graduations, during the past three weeks. I am simply amazed by the talent of our students and staff and I am proud to lead this outstanding school division.
      • I attended several athletic events, musicals, spring choir and orchestra concerts, comedy presentations, the Student Leadership Conference, senior picnics, band battles and fundraisers to prevent suicide and help the homeless, just to name a few. One of the Family and Consumer Sciences classes made me a delicious lunch, I danced the Macarena, played a goat in a skit, and jumped out of a Viking costume. We also officially broke ground on our 13th high school located near the Jiffy Lube Live site. If you follow me @SuperPWCS on Twitter, you can see pictures of these great events.
      • In the past few days, I have also had the pleasure of congratulating graduates, with many of our Board members, at the Governor's School, Colgan, Forest Park, Freedom, Gar-Field, Hylton, Osbourn Park, Potomac, Stonewall Jackson, Woodbridge, Patriot and Battlefield High Schools. The only school I couldn't get to was Brentsville District High School because it was at the exact same time as another ceremony. It will be first on the list next year.
      • Congratulations to the Class of 2019, and thank you to the teachers and staff members, as well as family members, who helped support our students throughout the years. I am hopeful that our graduates will follow their dreams and be kind to everyone, each and every day .
    • I would also like to congratulate Neil Beech, principal of Osbourn Park High School. Mr. Beech was named Principal of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Librarians. Mr. Beech was nominated by OPHS librarians, Jennifer Coleman and Rheetha Lawlor. Both librarians cited the support Beech has demonstrated of expanding the traditional views of a library into a hub of activity.
    • And speaking of Osbourn Park High School, the musical, "The Addams Family", which I attended recently, was nominated for five Cappie Awards. Ava Foster and Nathan Rankin won Cappies for best Hair and Makeup. Chairman Dr. Lateef also presented an award for Best Set at the event, which is a student program in which students are trained as critics, attend shows at other schools, write and publish reviews in local newspapers. Good job!
    • Benton Middle School teacher Anne Walker, who teaches seventh-grade history and social science, has been awarded the James Madison Fellowship for Virginia, a prestigious award earned by one teacher from each state. The award supports the graduate study of American history by aspiring and experienced secondary school teachers of American history, American government, and civics. Congratulations to Ms. Walker.
    • Forest Park High School has been named a Safe Sports School 1st Team by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA). Forest Park is the first school in Prince William County to receive this award. NATA said that the award recognizes Forest Park High School's efforts and positions the school as a leader in sports safety and a community concerned with its student athletes and their care.
    • Fifteen schools in Prince William County earned 2019 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards for advanced student learning and achievement.
      • Only 270 schools and nine school divisions statewide earned one of the awards. The VIP program recognizes schools and divisions that exceed state and federal accountability standards and achieve excellence goals established by the Governor and Board of Education.
      • Battlefield High School, Patriot High School, Mary G. Porter Traditional School, and Pennington Traditional School were recognized with 2019 Board of Education Excellence awards. Only 90 schools in the state won this honor. These schools also met all state and federal accountability benchmarks and made significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities set by the board.
      • Alvey, Ashland, Cedar Point, Glenkirk, Marshall, Minnieville, Mountain View and T. Clay Wood Elementary Schools, The Nokesville School, and Gainesville and Reagan Middle Schools earned the Distinguished Achievement Award. Only 175 schools statewide earned this award.
      • Congratulations to these schools, their teachers and staff, and the students and their families for this outstanding accomplishment.
