About Dr. Walts

Dr. Steven L. Walts became Superintendent of Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) in 2005. One of the country’s largest and fastest growing school systems, PWCS serves over 90,000 students in 100 schools and centers and employs more than 11,500, making it the largest employer in Prince William County, and the second-largest school division in Virginia. During Dr. Walts’ tenure, 24 new schools have opened on time and within budget. His trademark includes at least one visit to every school every year.

Dr. Walts, twice selected as Virginia’s Region IV Superintendent of the Year, is focused on maximizing student learning and what is best for children. In 2017-18, the National School Boards Association named PWCS one of only five first-place winners in the nation in the 2018 Magna Awards for equity initiatives. This prestigious award recognized the strategic moves the School Division made to increase the participation and success of all students in advanced coursework, and particularly for eliminating barriers to those who were previously underrepresented.

Dr. Walts led the effort to establish a regional science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) Governor’s School, and has increased opportunities for students at all levels to become involved with robotics, placing PWCS on the world stage in numerous robotics competitions. Under Dr. Walts’ leadership, the on-time graduation rate has increased to 92.1 percent, up from 83 percent in 2008. Graduates of the Class of 2018 were awarded $74 million in scholarships.

Initiatives include aggressive efforts to combat bullying, improve school safety, and work with educational partners to mentor today’s students to become tomorrow’s teachers. Dr. Walts is also credited with implementing full-day kindergarten and building strong relationships with corporate and business leaders who invest in students through 1,000 school partnerships, and generous support of SPARK, the PWCS education foundation. SPARK has raised nearly one million dollars in grant funding for PWCS teachers, schools and departments.

With ever-stronger efforts to recruit and retain the best and brightest educators and encourage high school students to take the rigorous Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Cambridge courses, Dr. Walts is leading the School Division to achieve its mission of Providing A World-Class Education for every student.

A native of Great Bend, Kansas, Dr. Walts received his doctorate degree in education policy and leadership from the University of Maryland with a 4.0 grade point average. He began his career as an elementary teacher, building principal, and intern to the superintendent in Wichita, Kansas, then served in Baltimore County, Maryland, as an assistant superintendent before becoming superintendent in Greece, New York in 1998.
