Middle school students walk into school Elementary students in line in hallway

Opening Day 2019 was a great one across the School Division as our youngest students started school with hugs from parents who snapped those first day pictures, and older students reunited with friends.

Nearly 91,000 students fill our 99 school buildings this year — arriving on our 800 school buses each day and thousands more walking. We also welcomed approximately 800 new staff members joining our more than 11,500 educators and support team.

Highlights from the first day:

  • WJLA Good Morning Washington anchored its morning show live from Stonewall Jackson High School
  • NBC4 Washington broadcast from Mountain View Elementary
  • The School Division successfully launched The Hub, a new portal for parents, teachers, and students to access educational information. The Hub encompasses ParentVUE, StudentVUE, and TeacherVUE.
  • Thanks to the hard work of our teachers and school staff, everyone had a great first day.
