Colgan HS students with their instructor

This story features a learning activity that took place prior to school closures due to COVID-19.

Congratulations to Ariel Meyer, Josalyn Dyer, and Jacob Winebarger, the student team from Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School who took home the Rookie of the Year Award at the 2020 National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Student Competition. Winebarger also received a NAHB Outstanding Student Award. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Student Competition is part of the International Builders Show, held earlier this year in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The team was tasked with developing a complete set of authentic, permit-ready working drawings, a detailed materials and labor estimate, and a logically sequenced, full construction time schedule meant to complete a specific two-story home. The competitors, accompanied by their technology education teacher, Tim Mason, traveled to Las Vegas to present in the architecture category before a panel of industry professionals.
