Sue Danielson is the VA NAESP Distinguished Principal of the Year

The National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) announced that Sue Danielson has been named Virginia's recipient of the 2020 NAESP National Distinguished Principal Award. Danielson has been the principal of Rosa Parks Elementary School for nine years. A PWCS principal has won this award four times in the past five years.

"I am both humbled and honored to represent the principals of Virginia as we embark into these uncharted waters of education," said Danielson. "Educators across our state will continue to put the social and emotional wellbeing and learning of our children first. Together we are stronger!"

According to NAESP, honorees must be current principals of schools where programs are designed to meet the academic and social needs of all students and where there are firmly established community ties with parents and local business organizations. Distinguished Principal Award recipients are outstanding elementary and middle-level administrators who set high standards for instruction, student achievement, character, and climate for the students, families, and staffs in their learning communities.

"I'm very proud for Sue," said Todd Erickson, associate superintendent for central elementary schools. "She has developed an outstanding culture at her school that focuses on collaboration and high expectations for teaching and learning. Rosa Parks Elementary is an exemplar of International Baccalaureate instruction, which helps students develop an understanding of interconnection between subject areas and a focus on making a difference in the world. Students, staff, and parents love the school. This is a reflection of Ms. Danielson's positive, powerful impact on the school's culture."

Danielson, who is in her 40th year as an educator, has been a physical education teacher, classroom teacher, and school counselor. She served as assistant principal at Rosa Parks Elementary for five years before becoming principal there.
