Fifth-grade students at Neabsco Elementary School became meteorologists for a day when they virtually met Alex Liggitt, a meteorologist from ABC7 -WJLA. Cynthia Lindsay, math teacher, and Natalie Specioso, fifth-grade teacher, arranged the meeting and the group's feature on the station's Lunchbox Weather segment.

Starting in his backyard, Liggitt gave a brief introduction of himself and the profession, and then transitioned into his home weather studio. He explained the various aspects of his life as a meteorologist, including forecasting from home, and talked about the technology he uses. While Liggitt went into detail, students were prepared with many additional questions that he was happy to answer.

"The kids had a blast," said Lindsay. "They asked such good questions about his technology and the tools that [meteorologists] use."

Lindsay and Specioso also connected this session to their students' preparation for the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests.

"I looked through the Virginia SOLs standard for fifth-grade, and you have to be able to ask questions and make observations, read charts, analyze data, and more," said Lindsay. "[Liggitt] helped the students learn more about those skills."

Overall, Liggitt not only made it an educational experience, but he also introduced students to a potential profession. This session became a career introduction, especially for those students who have an interest in science or math.

"It was beneficial for students to hear about [Liggitt's] background in science and math because a lot of schools have students interested in [those subjects]," said Lindsay. "Even if one student can have that good feeling or takeaway, it is worth it. All it takes is one little spark."
