R. Dean Kilby, long-time PWCS educator and administrator, passed away on March 1, 2022. Kilby Elementary School in Woodbridge is named in his honor.

Kilby joined PWCS in 1956 as a teacher at Occoquan Elementary School. He held numerous positions during his many years of service, including principal at Lake Ridge, Marumsco, and Rockledge Elementary Schools, and Hampton Middle School. In addition, Kilby served as a director of middle schools, and of instructional support services.

In March 1970, the School Board unanimously approved a resolution submitted by the Marumsco Elementary School Parent Teacher Association asking that the school be renamed after Kilby as its first principal. This also helped to differentiate between it and the often-confused Marumsco Hills Elementary School.

Kilby retired in 1987 but continued to support the school division for another 10-15 years, even returning occasionally as a temporary employee. His wife, Betty Garrett Kilby, also deceased, was an educator for PWCS for 32 years.

A viewing will be held at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home in Dale City from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, March 20. There will be a funeral service at the same location at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 21. Kilby will be interred at Quantico National Cemetery.
