Mack Mboh, a junior at Patriot High School, recently moderated a national web forum called, “The Rule of Law for All,” hosted by Street Law, Inc. The webinar brought together national legal experts from the American Bar Association, United States District Court, Law School Admission Council, Assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States, and students from around the United States for a virtual discussion on the importance of the Constitution and the need for laws to apply equally to all citizens.

“It was an honor to be selected to moderate this panel of experts,” said Mboh. “I am a people person, so getting to interact with others and participate in a serious discussion on how to protect our rights was an amazing opportunity.”

Randi Warren, a social studies and law teacher at Patriot High, said the organizers of the webinar asked her to provide a student moderator. To Warren, the decision to put Mboh in front of a national audience made sense.

“We wanted to find a student who would not only represent our school, but to be the face and voice of all students on this incredibly important issue. We selected Mack because of her unique background - her family immigrated her from Cameroon - as well as her poise on camera and ability to think quickly,” said Warren, adding, “This webinar was on a national stage and to have our school select the student was an unbelievable honor.”

Warren hopes students attending the webinar have a renewed appreciation for Rule of Law and the significance of the Constitution. “It is what underpins our democracy and gives our citizenry faith that there is a body of laws working towards treating all of us equally regardless of our background,” she said.

Mboh’s reflection on what she took away from the webinar gives hope that students did embody the messages from the online forum.

“What I took away from this panel is how fragile and awesome our fundamental rights are,” Mboh said. “If we don't understand these rights that have been given to us, we won't be able to protect them.”
