Dear PWCS Families, Employees, and Community,
Yesterday, PWCS concluded hosting families and community members at our Safety and Security Briefings. These four meetings contributed to the ongoing discussions about our comprehensive approach to “deter, detect, and defend,” including the use of innovative preventative technology. I greatly appreciate those who attended these meetings and provided us with valuable feedback and questions. I invite everyone to review our website for more information. If you did not have an opportunity to attend one of the community engagement events and would like to share feedback on the prospect of utilizing the AI weapon screeners, please submit your comments or questions on our official form.
On March 15, the School Board will consider approval of the FY 2024 Proposed Budget and Capital Improvements Program. Additionally, the department of Research, Accountability and Strategic Planning will present an update on second quarter/first semester grades and changes to the accreditation ratings by the Virginia Department of Education.
In March, PWCS is celebrating several observances, including National Arts Education Month, which encompasses Music in Our Schools, Theatre in Our Schools, and Youth Art Month. We recognize the benefits of the arts and our Strategic Plan sets a goal of increasing student access to performance and production opportunities like auditions, concerts, and exhibitions. Our schools prepare and produce shows, musical concerts, art galleries, and more while our teachers cultivate our students' unique talents and develop transferable skill sets. We invite you to attend a school event and promote the importance of the arts with your students.
Women’s History Month is also in March, and this year’s theme is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.” When we make the conscious effort to weave women’s voices into our intertwining story, our history becomes more inclusive, and the picture of our present is more comprehensive. The International Conference of Women established March 8 as International Women’s Day in 1911. This historic day was established to reflect, appreciate, and celebrate the contributions of women today and throughout history. Be sure to look for features from the division as our schools, staff members, and students recognize the barrier-breaking achievements of women in history.
National School Social Work Week, March 5-11, is an opportunity for our community to acknowledge and celebrate the crucial work of our school social workers who support our students with mental health, behavioral challenges,and provide family support. Often unsung heroes to students in crisis, I thank our school social workers for their transformative work and the countless contributions to our community.
In closing, I am continually amazed at the innovative and creative learning that occurs every school day. Our students and teachers make the conscious effort to weave multiple voices into our curriculum for a more informed, inclusive, and interconnected educational experience. I invite you to watch one outstanding example of the seamless intertwining of Black History, Women’s History, and National Arts Education Month.
