C.D. Hylton High School students were excited to showcase their talents with friends, family, staff, and community members recently at Hylton High’s annual Night of the Arts event.
“Tonight, is a night to highlight all of the arts programs that we offer at Hylton. Not just art, but music, the Center for International Studies and Languages and even Career and Technical Education,” said Will Flannagan, one of Hylton’s art teachers leading the charge for the event.
Attendees visited beautifully displayed works of art throughout the common areas of the school, taking time to stop and marvel at the remarkable talent of each student. Craft stations and interactive displays were enjoyed by all, and spectacular music performances took place throughout the evening.
Joyce Sipe, another Hylton art teacher in charge of the event was delighted to welcome the local community to the Night of the Arts. “They can make art, they can see art, have a little snack, enjoy some music, watch some kids dance. It is a more personal event for the students and the local community than the larger all-county art shows.”
Tony Wyman, biology teacher, shared with attendees what the Biology Department is doing to infuse art into the science curriculum.
“We have done things like vocabulary storyboards or comics where the students illustrate what the eight characteristics of life are to them. This is how we start having them tune into the process of science through art,” he explained.
These lessons continue throughout the year incorporating art in different ways to hopefully make a more memorable impact on the students and help them better understand some of the more complex material like DNA.
“This event is a celebration for us, a way for art students to get recognition. Hylton is a big school and has a lot of really great specialty programs, so for us to be able to focus on the arts tonight is a great opportunity,” said Kanak Barua, a senior art student.
“I love art and I love seeing everyone happy for it and see everyone come together to celebrate all of the great programs we have here at Hylton,” said Eva Lazo, a tenth-grade art student at Hylton. It was a special night that was enjoyed by many and a great way to kick off Arts Education Month.

Los estudiantes de la escuela secundaria C.D. Hylton estaban muy emocionados de poder mostrar sus talentos ante amigos, familiares, personal y miembros de la comunidad en el evento anual de la Noche de las Artes de la escuela secundaria Hylton.
"Esta noche, es una noche para resaltar todos los programas de bellas artes que ofrecemos en Hylton. No sólo arte, sino música, el Centro de Estudios Internacionales e Idiomas e incluso Educación Técnica y Profesional", dijo Will Flannagan, uno de los profesores de arte de Hylton a cargo del evento.
Los asistentes visitaron las diferentes obras de arte bellamente expuestas por todas las zonas comunes del colegio, y se tomaron el tiempo para detenerse y admirar el extraordinario talento de cada alumno. Todos disfrutaron de las estaciones de manualidades y exposiciones interactivas, y durante la velada hubo actuaciones musicales muy espectaculares.
Joyce Sipe, otra profesora de arte de Hylton encargada del evento, se mostró encantada de dar la bienvenida a la comunidad local en esta Noche de las Artes. "Pueden crear arte, pueden ver arte, tomar un pequeño refrigerio, disfrutar de algo de música, ver bailar a algunos niños. Es un acontecimiento más personal para los estudiantes y la comunidad local que las grandes exposiciones de arte de todo el condado".
Tony Wyman, profesor de biología, compartió con los asistentes lo que está haciendo el departamento de biología para infundir el arte en el plan de estudios de ciencias.
"Hemos hecho cosas como guiones gráficos de vocabulario o historietas en las que los alumnos ilustran qué son para ellos las ocho características de la vida. Así es como empezamos a hacer que se familiaricen con el proceso de la ciencia a través del arte", explicó.
Estas lecciones continúan a lo largo del año incorporando el arte de diferentes maneras para lograr un impacto más duradero en los estudiantes y ayudarles a comprender mejor algunas de las materias más complejas, como el genoma humano (ADN).
"Este evento es una celebración para nosotros, una forma de que los estudiantes de arte reciban reconocimiento. Hylton es una gran escuela y tiene un número de programas de formación especializada, así que para nosotros poder centrarnos en las artes esta noche es una gran oportunidad", dijo Kanak Barua, estudiante de arte de último año.
"Me encanta el arte y ver a todo el mundo feliz alrededor de esto y, que todos nos podamos reunir para hacer un reconocimiento de los excelentes programas que tenemos aquí en Hylton" dijo Eva Lazo, estudiante de arte de décimo grado en Hylton. Fue una noche especial que fue disfrutada por muchos y una gran manera de iniciar el Mes de la Educación Artística.
