GFOA Certificate of Achievement For Excellence in Financial Reporting

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada has awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year 2021. This is the 19th consecutive year PWCS has received this prestigious award.

The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. The attainment of this award represents a significant accomplishment for the staff and a valuable service to county residents.

“PWCS has a long history of strong financial management as evidenced by receiving the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for 19 consecutive years,” shared Shakeel Yusuf, director of finance. “While the Finance Department staff work very hard year-round to confirm that financial processes are in place to ensure that the comprehensive annual financial report can be prepared, this accomplishment also recognizes the financial decisions made by the School Board and executive leadership. They create a positive tone from the top focused on managing the financial resources entrusted to PWCS and the contributions made by every department and school ensuring that financial controls are in place every day.”

The comprehensive annual financial report is prepared in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the GFOA. The goal of the program is not to assess the financial health of participating governments, but rather to ensure that users of their financial statements have the information they need to do so themselves.
