Several students from Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) were selected to attend the 2024 Governor’s School Summer Residential Program. This program provides the opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to receive intensive educational experiences in various disciplines.
There were a variety of academic programs offered this summer. Active versus passive voice – Virginia Tech hosted agriculture, Radford University hosted humanities and visual and performing arts, and the University of Lynchburg hosted mathematics, science and technology. Washington and Lee University and Randolph-Macon College hosted the Governor’s Foreign Language Academies.
Students who participate in the Governor’s Schools live on a college or university campus for up to four weeks, supervised by a director and student-life staff. For the month, students are involved in classroom and laboratory work, field studies, and research. There are also individual and group projects and performances, and seminars with noted scholars, visiting artists, and other professionals. During the mentorships, students are hand-picked to work side-by-side with research scientists, physicians, and a variety of other professionals. Students interact with their peers on both an academic and social level, expanding their knowledge while building friendships.
