Sharon Goff, physical education teacher at John D. Jenkins Elementary School, orchestrated a health and wellness event aimed at engaging the school community by providing resources to students, staff, and parents. The event not only highlighted the importance of physical activity but also the significance of cultivating family and community engagement.
Abdo and Allison Abla, a father and daughter who attended the event, shared their excitement. "Oh! We’re here for a lot of resources and activities. We did jump rope and now she [Allison] wants to do some bicycle riding and soccer," Abdo said. Allison added, "I’m excited for bicycle riding!"
The event provided a unique opportunity for parents to engage with their school staff. Devanee Bentley, a parent who attended the event, highlighted the importance of such events, stating, "I feel like with an event like this you get to know teachers and see teachers you’ve never seen before."
“I love the school, and I love the teachers here,” shared parent Christina Ridgeway. “They’ve helped me with my kids for the last few years, and if it wasn’t for them, then my kids wouldn’t be as well-adjusted as they are.”
The event included a performance by the Youth Sports VA Jump Rope Team. Attendees were encouraged to explore various tables set up by local vendors, offering activities and demonstrations. The Eastern Prince William Basketball Association demonstrated proper shooting techniques, while A-1 Cycling provided bicycles for hallway rides. Life Champ Martial Arts taught three basic moves, and Yoga Six Studio conducted a comprehensive lesson for both students and parents. Additionally, free blood pressure readings were available for attendees, emphasizing the importance of health monitoring.
The event concluded with a free raffle with items provided by the vendors, including free yoga classes, a free swim lesson, and a free helmet.
