Students from Spain visit PWCS

C.D. Hylton High School recently welcomed 18 students and two teachers from IES Veles e Vents in Valencia, Spain, marking the school's first exchange program. The Spanish students stayed with host families from Hylton High, experiencing life in the United States and exploring sites around Washington, D.C. They also participated in activities with Hylton students.

Hylton is the only school in Prince William County Public Schools with an exchange program. The school has long-standing exchanges with schools in France and Italy, and the addition of a Spanish school opens more opportunities for students. These opportunities include international travel, hosting international students, and meeting them in classes. The school is proud to offer these experiences to its students and community and hopes to continue growing the exchange program.

Students felt the impact of the exchange. "It hit me hard in class once they left," said Alexa, a senior.

"It was so sad to say goodbye. Who decided to let them leave?" added Kylie, a freshman.

Samantha Lennon, Center for International Studies and Languages coordinator, emphasized the value of these exchanges, stating, "From getting to host new students to traveling to their country and learning from each other; it's all extremely valuable to our students, staff, and community."

In April, 14 students and two teachers from Hylton will visit their Spanish counterparts at IES Veles e Vents, completing the second part of the exchange. The program aims to foster new friendships and expand cultural knowledge.
