The American Heart Association (AHA) has named Kennedy Shivers, a fourth-grade student, and Aubrey Spiess, a second-grade student, both at Bristow Run Elementary, as this year’s Open Your Heart Honorees. To commemorate this honor, AHA will recognize these students at the annual Heart Ball held in Washington D.C. in April. This year marks the first year that the organization has honored two honorees during the event.
Kennedy expressed her excitement stating, "I think the gala is going to be fun and I am excited about getting dressed up in my pink dress with hearts."
"I am so happy to see Dr. Jonas there because he saved my life. I have not met him, and he helped make my heart better,” shared Aubrey.
Kennedy and Aubrey are being honored for their continued engagement and inspiration as Heart Warrior Ambassadors for AHA. Their involvement in the annual Bristow Run Kids Heart Challenge has helped raise awareness and donations to support AHA.
During the event’s Open Your Heart Moment, a short film will debut for each of the honorees, showcasing their stories and the significant impact they have made as ambassadors.
Rhonda Jeck, principal at Bristow Run Elementary, shared, “Bristow Run is always honored to support the American Heart Association through our annual Kids Heart Challenge. Not only are we committed to academic growth in our students, but we also prioritize their overall health and well-being. We love this annual challenge because it is especially meaningful to a couple of our very own students who are heart heroes. Wishing our heart heroes an amazing experience at the American Heart Association Gala!”
The Heart Ball is the American Heart Association, Greater Washington Region's annual gala celebrating their lifesaving mission and expanding efforts in the community.
