The Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals (VAESP) has selected Alyse Zeffiro, principal of Kerrydale Elementary School, as the recipient of the 2025 Distinguished Principal Award for Virginia. The award honors principals who excel in instruction, student achievement, character, and creating a positive environment for their learning communities.

"I love being the principal at Kerrydale because of the incredible students and dedicated teachers who make this community so special,” said Zeffiro. “My leadership is a reflection of the amazing people I am fortunate to work alongside each day. Each of you brings so much positivity, passion, and light into my life, and it's because of you that my role is so fulfilling. You don't just make my job wonderful—you make it truly meaningful."

Zeffiro found out she won the award in early April. As she entered one of her classrooms, she was surprised with flowers and balloons by VAESP board members, Superintendent of Prince William County Public Schools Dr. LaTanya D. McDade, and Kerrydale Elementary staff and students. Her face lit up as everyone yelled “surprise,” followed by a flurry of hugs and a short heartfelt speech.

Zeffiro has been the principal at Kerrydale since 2018. Under Zeffiro's leadership, Kerrydale has received numerous prestigious accolades. Among these are the designation as a National Title I Distinguished School for its success in closing student achievement gaps, and the 2024 Virginia Highest Achievement Exemplar School Award, bestowed by the Virginia Board of Education. Kerrydale is also the only school in Virginia and one of seven in the United States to receive The Visible Learning+ School Award, recognizing schools that encourage students to take charge of their learning using Visible Learning principles.

As Zeffiro continues to lead Kerrydale Elementary School, her dedication to fostering a nurturing and achievement-oriented environment remains unwavering. Her recognition by VAESP not only highlights her exceptional leadership but also serves as an inspiration to fellow educators. With a steadfast commitment to excellence, Zeffiro exemplifies the profound impact that a passionate and devoted principal can have on a school community.
