All In Tutoring bridges achievement gaps, partners Chris Yung Elementary School, Gainesville High School for academic success

Chris Yung Elementary School and Gainesville High School have teamed up to offer All In Tutoring, a high-dosage academic support program for students in grades 3-5. The program identifies students based on Virginia Growth Assessments and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt fall growth measures for third graders, and previous Standards of Learning scores for fourth and fifth graders.

“This program is designed to support learners who need varying levels of extra support to ensure their success and academic growth,” said Melissa Morgan, All In Tutoring program coordinator at Chris Yung Elementary. “I’ve tried to use the parameters set up with this program to find creative ways to maximize student learning by incorporating community members, high school students, approved curriculum materials, games, and more to tailor each learning experience to the needs of the students it is supporting.”

The program is structured into two groups, both focusing on math and reading.

  • Group one meets twice a week for one hour. Sessions are split between online learning and small-group instruction led by classroom teachers and teaching assistants.
  • Group two meets daily for at least 30 minutes. High school tutors work with students in small groups within classrooms, with teachers available to support as needed.

"When I don’t know something he [Collin, a high school tutor] always finds a way to help me without telling me the answer. It’s awesome,” shared a third-grade student at Chris Yung.

High school tutors from Gainesville High bring energy and creativity to the sessions—dressing up, rewarding effort, and hosting themed Fridays where students review the week’s focus through games and progress monitoring.

“All In Tutoring has shown me the positive impact you can have on students both academically and personally,” said Evie Anderson, a Gainesville High senior and participant in the school’s Teaching Program. “I love working with such a diverse group of learners and accommodating their different learning styles. All In Tutoring confirmed my decision to pursue a teaching career. It has taught me patience, teaching strategies, and has prepared me for my future as an educator.”

Chris Yung Principal Stephanie Downey praised the high school tutors’ contributions. “Our high school student tutors are an invaluable part of our school community. Their dedication and enthusiasm not only help our elementary students grow academically but have inspired them to develop a love for learning. We deeply appreciate the positive impact they have on our younger students, fostering a supportive and enriching environment for everyone involved.”

With an emphasis on filling achievement gaps with fluid groups and continuous monitoring, students are empowered to learn and grow through All In Tutoring.
