Equable Budgeting Taskforce - Jaime Van Echo presented an update. The team was excited to share the improvements that a $9 million increase could offer. They shared recommendations to increase compensation for employees and student services. They also detailed the need to adequately fund family and community engagement. The county worked with Educational Research Strategies to develop objectives for creating a budget that emphasized equity and adequacy, ensuring that all schools have two funding streams:
The goals:
A connection was made with Dr. Reyher's presentation and how the needs of the students in the building would be prioritized on need rather than the previous model of funding, allocating solely by disability category. The flexibility would be defined explicitly in the budgeting manual offered to principals and staff in charge of creating and maintaining their individual school budgets. Central office would be responsible for providing each school with their core funding resources. This information was particularly important for our committee. Core funding resources include supplies, equipment, and services. It also centralizes IT, athletic equipment, and textbooks with no reduction in school budgets. This could also include updates and funding for school playgrounds. One of the recommendations of the task force was the critical need for assigned nursing staff at every school. |
