Research is clear that access to high-quality early childhood education improves academic, social, and long-term outcomes for students. Universal pre-K aligns with PWCS’ commitment to equity, early learning, and ensuring students enter kindergarten ready to learn.
Universal pre-K means PWCS is working toward a system where every four‑year‑old living in the county can opt-in in a full‑day pre‑K program with transportation provided at no cost by the 2030–31 school year.
In the first year, PWCS will focus on aligning the current preschool programs. This includes moving current four-year-old half-day classes to a full day schedule, aligning the daily schedules with the elementary school day, and ensuring families have more consistent access to services across program types. The division will also add a small number of new seats where space is available.
Yes. During the phased rollout, demand for early childhood care and education will exceed available PWCS capacity, particularly in the early years.
Additionally, families will continue to seek a range of options that meet their unique needs, including full-day, full-year care beyond the school calendar; services for infants, toddlers, and younger preschoolers; flexible schedules and specialized programs, etc.
Private providers remain a critical part of the early childhood ecosystem in Prince William County.
Families will continue to make decisions based on a variety of factors, including schedule flexibility, proximity and convenience, program offerings and instructional approach, religion and family beliefs, and availability of care for multiple children of different ages.
As PWCS universal Pre-K expands, providers may see shifts in preferences for four-year-old programming, but the need for comprehensive, flexible care will remain.
PWCS sees strong opportunities for collaboration with community-based providers. We are committed to exploring models that help providers continue to operate successfully while expanding services for families.
In partnership with Foundation First, Ready Region North Central, PWCS will continue to share updates as the universal pre-K expansion progresses. We are committed to creating opportunities for ongoing dialogue and feedback, with the goal of maintaining open lines of communication as we move forward together.
