Prince William County Public Schools welcomes eligible VRS retirees to return to teaching in designated critical shortage areas — allowing you to earn a full salary while continuing to receive your Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits.

How It Works

Virginia law allows K-12 school divisions to hire eligible VRS retirees for select full-time teaching and administrative positions identified as critical shortage areas. If you qualify, you can:

  • Receive your full monthly VRS retirement benefit 
  • Earn a full paycheck in a critical shortage role 

Eligibility Requirements 

To be eligible, you must: 

  • Complete a six-month bona fide break in service (no work for any VRS employer during this period) 
  • Hold a valid Virginia Board of Education teaching license
  • Not have retired on disability or with a reduced VRS benefit under an early retirement incentive program

  • Elementary Education (Preschool–5)
  • English (Secondary)
  • Health and Physical Education
  • History and Social Science (Secondary)
  • Mathematics (Grades 6–12, including Algebra I)
  • Middle Education (Grades 6–8)
  • Science (Secondary)
  • Special Education (Preschool–12)
  • World Language (K–12)
