Family Life Education

Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) offers a Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades K-10 that provides students with the knowledge and skills to make informed, responsible decisions related to human growth and development, healthy relationships, and social and emotional health.

FLE curriculum includes age-appropriate lessons, including the following topics:

  • Abstinence education
  • Body safety
  • Disease prevention
  • Healthy relationships and consent
  • Human trafficking
  • Puberty education and human reproduction
  • Value of postponing sexual activity

FLE curriculum is comprised of two units of instruction:

  • Emotional and Social Health
  • Human Growth and Development

Instruction is designed to promote parental involvement, foster a positive self-concept, and provide mechanisms for coping with peer pressure and the stresses of modern living, per the student's developmental level and abilities.

What Parents and Guardians Should Know

Opting to Remove Your Child from All or Part of FLE

Parents/guardians can opt their student out of all or part of the Family Life Education lessons. An opt-out request form will be provided by the school before FLE instruction each school year. Parents/guardians can access the grade-level course objectives and the opt-out request form on the appropriate grade-level course page.

To indicate a decision to remove a child from all or part of FLE, complete the opt-out request form and return it to the child's teacher and/or school counselor. Parents should review the objectives carefully before making opt-out decisions.

Review of Curriculum

Parents/guardians have the right to review the complete family life curriculum, including all supplemental materials used in any family life education program. Curriculum materials are available for parent review at their student’s school or in the Parent FLE Course in Canvas.

Notice of Dates of FLE Instruction

Schools shall notify parents/guardians of the dates FLE instruction will be delivered. Students who are opted out will be provided with non-punitive instructional activities during FLE.
