Why should students read during the summer?

Students who read during the summer can grow and explore new experiences to support lifelong reading habits. Summer is a great time for students to read for pleasure and dive deep into their favorite genre or experience something new. Providing students with a choice in what they read increases their reading motivation and engagement.

  1. Review the options on the choice board.
  2. Select a book that fits the chosen option. You may pick a print book, e-book, or audiobook.
  3. Read actively - think about ideas, characters, themes, and perspectives as you read.

A few helpful hints:

  • Choose a book that challenges you but still feels interesting.
  • Try something new - summer is a great time to explore different genres, topics, or voices.

Where can students get the books?

Families can find a wide array of age-appropriate books at Prince William Public Libraries (PWPL).

The PWPL digital library also provides free access to thousands of online and digital resources, including e-books, audiobooks, newspapers, and premium websites. If you do not have a PWPL card, you can contact the public library to register for a Digital Library card.

Families can access Common Sense Media and School Library Journal to review books to determine readability.
