Following their annual performance review of the Superintendent, the Prince William County School Board voted to approve a one-year extension of Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) Superintendent Dr. LaTanya D. McDade's four-year contract, with a revised contract end date of June 30, 2028.

Dr. Babur Lateef, School Board Chairman At-Large, said the contract extension reflects Dr. McDade’s tremendous leadership over the last three years.

“We are thrilled to offer Dr. McDade an extension,” he said. “Her achievements include executing a strong strategic plan that the division is on track to accomplish, implementing a collective bargaining agreement, providing teachers and staff with historic salary increases, and bringing more accountability and transparency to the school division. Furthermore, she has increased opportunities for student success, and is committed to making sure our students have postsecondary success upon graduation.”

Dr. Lateef said the contract extension is crucial as many school divisions are seeking talented individuals like Dr. McDade.

“Dr. McDade is a highly sought individual to lead other school districts across the nation; we are fortunate to have her talents here in Prince William County,” Dr. Lateef continued. “We are grateful for her commitment to our school division, and she has become part of Prince William County’s family. Her leadership has shown tremendous dividends for our community, and we hope to keep her for the long term.”

In the past two years, PWCS has improved math performance by 17% and science performance by 9%. Additionally, PWCS has experienced a 19% improvement in early literacy performance on the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening Assessment (PALS). One hundred percent of PWCS graduates have a postsecondary plan for entering college, technical schools, the military, the workforce, or access community transition services. Additionally, all schools now have a parent liaison, and 100% of our schools have at least one formal business or community agency partnership aligned with identified priorities in the school’s continuous improvement plan.

Dr. LaTanya D. McDade was appointed July 1, 2021, as the Superintendent for Prince William County Public Schools, which is the second-largest division in Virginia and serves more than 90,000 students. She is the first woman and first African American to serve as Superintendent of the school division.
