Dear PWCS Families, Employees and Community,
In the wake of the tragic shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia on September 4, police departments across the country, including here in Prince William County, have received information of unsubstantiated threats of additional violence at our schools. The schools and police department take all threats of violence to our students and staff seriously. At this time, the investigated threats appear to stem from misinformation and rumors spread over social media. While social media can be used in positive ways, inaccurate or unverified information can understandably cause angst and panic. Unfortunately, we often see spikes in this activity following actual tragedies.
In our investigations, we frequently find students who initiate these threats or manipulate social media postings to spread to others often claim to do it as a “joke.” Acts of violence of any kind should never be perceived as a joke. While adults may understand the seriousness of these actions, some students may be less aware of the repercussions. These may include both charges by law enforcement and PWCS Code of Behavior discipline up to and including expulsion. We implore parents to speak to their children about the dangers of spreading misinformation or rumors over social media. These are serious acts that can have a domino effect on the future of our young people. Again, no responsible person treats threats of violence toward schools dismissively or humorously.
We remind everyone that if you see something, say something by contacting law enforcement or school authorities. Please do not spread potential misinformation over social media platforms. The police department and school division communicate frequently to ensure a safe environment for students and the Prince William County Police Department Youth Services staff is embedded with school officials to provide a safe environment for our students. Our school buildings are secure and recent additional measures put in place by the school system, such as safety screening technology, and online reporting, are enhancing those efforts.
Safety is a community effort. We appreciate your assistance in sharing this message with your children. We must all work together to maintain a safe and secure environment where learning can thrive.
