PWCS state of the schools 2023-24 update

Superintendent of Schools Dr. LaTanya D. McDade, Dr. Tim Neall, director of research, assessment, and data services, and other central office leaders recently shared the 2024 Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) State of the Schools to the School Board. The presentation highlighted the division’s progress across key commitments and areas that remain a focus for continued improvement.

“The state of schools presentation highlights the incredible progress we’ve made and the dedication of our staff, students, and families. We’re committed to continuing this positive momentum and ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed. Together, we’re building a brighter future for our community,” said Prince William County School Board Chairman At-Large Dr. Babur Lateef.

"Since the implementation of the Strategic Plan, PWCS has made tremendous strides in ensuring that every student, regardless of their background or circumstances, has access to a high-quality education,” said Dr. McDade.

On-time graduation rates saw a significant increase to 94.3%, a reflection of efforts to support students in reaching this goal. English Learners demonstrated considerable growth in language acquisition, a promising indicator of the effectiveness of targeted programs. PWCS reported positive gains in Standards of Learning pass rates, outperforming state averages. Additionally, participation rates on SAT and PSAT exams have risen, reflecting a commitment to expanding college and career readiness. However, performance gaps for English Learners and students with disabilities persist and remain a priority for the division to address.

“As we continue to move forward,” Dr. McDade said, “our commitment to equity, excellence, and collaboration will remain at the forefront, ensuring that every student is prepared to succeed in a rapidly changing world.”

PWCS reported a decrease in overall dropout rates, with notable reductions among English Learners, Hispanic students, and students with disabilities. This aligns with efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment. Chronic absenteeism has dropped by more than 5%, signaling progress in engaging students and maintaining their connection to school. Furthermore, employee and teacher retention rates remain strong, above 90%, which is critical to maintaining consistency and quality in instruction and school culture.

Family engagement within PWCS has remained consistent, continuing to be an essential element in student success. The division recognizes the importance of building strong partnerships between schools and families to support student learning and development.

“From innovative teaching practices to stronger community partnerships, we are fostering an environment where students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally,” Dr. McDade asserted, “Our progress is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of our staff, families, and the community at large.”

As PWCS moves forward into the 2024-25 school year, accelerating academic growth and closing achievement gaps remain top priorities. Central office initiatives and school-level improvement plans reflect this commitment. A major focus for the year will be the implementation of the Virginia Literacy Act at all grade levels, aiming to improve early literacy outcomes. Additionally, the On-Time Graduation Task Force will continue its focused efforts to further improve graduation rates and reduce dropout rates for all student groups.

Dr. McDade concluded, “Together, we are building a brighter future for every child in Prince William County Public Schools.”
