English class equips high school seniors with essential college, career skills

For four weeks each year, English 12 students focus on preparing for the next phase of their lives, whether that involves pursuing higher education, entering the workforce, or exploring other opportunities. During the English 12: Effective Workplace and Academic Writing unit, students create resumes, cover letters, and personal statements tailored for college and scholarship applications. They also spend class time completing college and job applications and delivering elevator pitches, equipping them with the skills needed for postsecondary success. Students are also empowered to complete their FAFSA applications, and research scholarships, colleges, and careers.

The English 12: Effective Workplace and Academic Writing unit utilizes Naviance, a free online tool for all Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) students. It aids in college and career planning, resume building, career and personality inventories, and goal setting. The tool is available in 75 languages, and guides students through various modules focused on college preparedness and workplace readiness, while also preparing them with life skills.

Corbin Banks, a senior at Freedom High School, expressed her gratitude for the unit and its benefits.

“I think it’s helpful to do this in class because your teachers can give you feedback. The interviews definitely help. Teachers give you pointers on what to say and what not to say. This professional setting prepares you for college. I feel like it’s been really helpful,” said Banks.

Brayden Diehl, a senior at C.D. Hylton High School, agrees that the unit has helped him prepare for the future.

“We’ve been working on resumes, elevator pitches, and how to make personal narratives to help prepare us for the future. I feel like it’s checked a lot of things off my to-do list,” said Diehl.

Modules guide students through essential life skills, such as career readiness, selecting the right school or career path, and weighing the pros and cons of leaving home after high school. This unit is one of the many ways PWCS prepares students for graduation and successful futures.
